4-Day Itinerary for Exploring the Best of İzmir, Turkey:

Ancient Agora, Kemeraltı Bazaar, Alsancak, Karşıyaka, Çeşme and Ephesus

Day 1:

  1. Morning arrival in İzmir.
  2. Freshen up at your hotel.
  3. Start your day at the İzmir Agora. Public transportation and walking make the place accessible daily.

  4. Learn about the Agora’s history and significance on a guided tour (if available)
  5. Lunch at a local eatery near the Agora after the tour.
  6. Visit the İzmir Archaeological Museum in the afternoon. The museum has many Smyrna relics.
  7. After the museum, explore the Kemeraltı Bazaar, one of Izmir’s oldest and largest. Try local street food and buy souvenirs here.

  8. Dine in a Turkish restaurant and party at a city center bar in the evening.

Day 2:

  1. Start the day at Konak Square, where the Konak Clock Tower and Konak Mosque are located.
  2. After that, visit Alsancak, a Victorian neighborhood with lovely streets. Explore local shops, cafes, and restaurants.

  3. If you prefer, you can visit the Kemeraltı area in the afternoon, which is known for its historic Ottoman houses, notably the Pasaport sector, which is pleasant and photogenic.

Day 3:

  1. Start the day at Izmir’s historic Kemeraltı Market. There are fruits, veggies, spices, and Turkish sweets.
  2. After the market, visit Izmir’s oldest church, St. Polycarp, in Alsancak. The church’s interior showcases the city’s Christian roots.
  3. Visit Karşıyaka, a hilltop suburb with city and sea views, in the afternoon. The city’s most picturesque street, Karşıyaka Bazaar, has stores and eateries.


  4. After Karşıyaka, visit Çeşme(while summer), a seaside town with magnificent beaches, clear waters, and charming architecture.
  5. Return to İzmir in the evening and walk down the coastal promenade to see the sunset over the bay.

Day 4:

  1. Explore Selçuk in the morning before returning home. UNESCO World Heritage Site Ephesus is located in Selçuk.
  2. Take a guided tour to Ephesus to visit the Great Theater, Library of Celsus, and ancient Greece and Rome.
  3. After Ephesus, visit the St. John Basilica in Izmir, where the apostle John is buried.
    Before leaving, unwind at the hotel.
  4. After supper, return to your hotel.
