Some Historical Places and Green Areas of Izmir

  • Kadifekale

According to historical accounts, Alexander the Great (Alexandros in Turkish) of Macedonia arrived in the Izmir area in 334 BC, routed the Persian Empire’s army, and founded the modern city of Smyrna in what is now known as Kadifekale.

  • Agora

Agora, located in the Basmane neighborhood in the heart of the city, dates back to the second century AD and was constructed during the Roman Period.

  • Kızlarağası Inn

This inn, constructed in 1744, is not only the most opulent in Izmir, but also an excellent example of Ottoman architecture. Today, it is renowned for its coffee shops.

  • Elevator

Nesim Levi, a Jewish businessman who lived in Izmir and worked in Karataş, had this building built in 1907 so that people could climb up Halil Rfat Paşa Street from Mithatpaşa Street.

  • Tepekule Mound (Bayraklı)

The existence of artifacts dating back to 3000 BCE is evidence of Izmir’s long history.

  • Konak Square and Clock Tower

There was a square here when the Government House first opened in the 19th century, back in the Ottoman era. One of Izmir’s most recognizable landmarks, the Konak Clock Tower, was erected in 1901 to celebrate the silver anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II’s accession to the throne.
