Preparing your trip to İzmir: advices & hints

Preparing your trip to İzmir: advices & hints

1. Most resort beaches are municipal. Only some are hotel-owned. Public beaches are free, and beach equipment costs US$1-2.

2. Only huge supermarkets and department stores can set prices. Bargain at private stores and markets. If a product’s price appears too expensive and the seller won’t negotiate, gently leave the store. One of the surrounding businesses will have a similar product at a better price.

3. Everyone tips. Restaurant tips average 10%. Guides and taxi drivers should be paid equally. Tourists visiting local baths and beauty salons should remember to tip at least 20% and split it among the workers.

4. Take taxis at special parking or call them. Even though most taxis have counters, it’s wise to confirm the fare beforehand. Taxis charge double from midnight to 6 am.

5. Hotels have severe rules. Some hotels prohibit smoking, while others forbid food in rooms. Hotel rules should be explained upon arrival.

6. Tourist-favorite henna tattoos are a concern. They discolor sheets and towels irreparably. Hotels penalise them heavily.

7. Mosques prohibit shoes. It can be carried in a bag on an outing. Some holy sites may bar tourists with exposing or colorful clothes. Long-sleeved blouses and shirts and knee-length pants are required. Women must cover their heads with handkerchiefs.

8. During the holy month of Ramadan, many restaurants are closed, and others don’t serve any alcoholic beverages at all.

9. The voltage from the power source is 220 V. Some cheap hotels have their own power generators that they can use. In this case, there is a good chance that the power will go out.
